URSS. 256 pp. (Russian). Paperback. ISBN 978-5-9710-3345-5.

English jokes and idioms --- proverbs, sayings, parables, toasts, anecdotes, aphorisms from celebrities and unknown authors, with Russian translation-equivalents are helpful to English-language learners (and English speakers mastering the Russian language) giving them a deeper insight into the very core of the language, uncovering the rules of creation and usage of the famous English humor by comparing them with the Russian analogues. Vigorous English style, be it a business talk, statesmen’s speeches, or even an epitaph, cannot do without irony; one cannot catch the idea without seizing the point of humor. The author shows the very “atoms” of the vigorous English style --- idioms and some slang phrases with their Russian equivalents, as well as expressions borrowed by European languages from Latin. Following the issue of the same author’s “Anatomy of Humor” presenting the system analysis of Russian humor the new book systematizes the wealth of English humor.

The book is addressed some more to those who strive for complying with the spirit of the English language rather than with its “letter”, for understanding of its though faint but everlasting humor, irony and sarcasm of every dialogue.

Zhivoj anglijskij yazik (Predislovie)

Eta kniga -- popitka pomoch' izuchayuschim anglijskij yazik ovladet' im na samom visokom urovne. Material pozvolyaet sokhranit' ironicheskij stil' i v samom protsesse obucheniya, privedya smeshannie anglo-russkie anekdoti, so- putstvuyuschie protsessu izucheniya yazika. Kniga postroena takim obrazom, chto ona odnovremenno yavlyaetsya anglo-russkim slovarem -- perevod vsekh virazhenij daetsya tut zhe, zerkal'no, chto pozvolyaet assotsiativno rasshirit' i slovarnij zapas chitatelya. Vse shutki v proze i stikhakh dani v perevode avtora.

A vse potomu, chto lyuboj zhurnalist, pisatel', sobesednik, neproizvol'no stremit'sya nasitit' rech' paradoksami, neozhidanni- mi sravneniyami, slengom. K schast'yu, okazivaetsya, chto bol'shinstvo yazikovikh "fokusov" v russkom i anglijskom blagopoluchno "peresekayutsya", imeyut pryamie analogi, pust' ne vsegda bukval'nie, no ochen' chasto "smislovie". Eto otnositsya ne tol'ko k slengovim virazheniyam, no takzhe k pogovorkam, aforizmam, anekdotam i shutkam. Usvoit' eti "peresecheniya" -- prakticheski oznachaet vikhod na visshij uroven' ponimaniya i ispol'zovaniya chuzhogo yazika.

Vi khotite nauchit'sya snosno ob'yasnyat'sya na anglijskom yazike, chitat' knigi, smotret' kinofil'mi i teleperedachi, ponimaya ikh smisl? Esli eto predel vashikh mechtanij, vsego vam nailuchshego. No eta kniga esche i dlya tekh, kto khochet popitat'sya proniknut' ne "v bukvu", a v dukh anglijskogo yazika, ponimat' ego ele ulovimij, no vsegda prisutstvuyuschij v lyubom dialoge yumor, ironiyu, sarkazm. Vse naslishani ob etoj osobennosti anglichan i amerikantsev, no pochemu-to schitayut, chto aforizmi Oskara Uajl'da, shutki Bernarda Shou i Marka Tvena prisuschi tol'ko etim avtoram. Eto zabluzhdenie. Na samom dele, ves' anglijskij yazik, ego metafori, rozigrishi, frazi, nashpigovan paradoksami, kalamburami, slengovimi virazheniyami i idiomami. K schast'yu, ochen' chasto vse eto imeet russkie analogi, i neizvestno, kto u kogo zaimstvoval eti paradoksi. Mozhet bit' oni rodilis' nezavisimo drug ot druga, iz obschnostej chelovecheskoj prirodi, psikhologii i istorii.

Ponimanie analogij i spetsificheskikh osobennostej kazhdogo yazika daet neozhidannij klyuchik k usvoeniyu i rasshireniyu ne tol'ko slovarnogo zapasa, no i pozvolyaet perestupit' nevidimij mezh'yazikovij bar'er. Mi khotim popitat'sya, pol'zuyas' idiomaticheskimi analogiyami, preodolet' preslo- vutij skeptitsizm perevodchikov, i dat' vozmozhnost' lyubomu izuchayuschemu chuzhoj (anglijskij ili russkij) yazik suschestvenno pripodnyat' svoj uroven'.

Eto pozvolit, na nash vzglyad, ispol'zovat' privedennie virazheniya v zhizni, v razgovore, i glavnoe, zapomnit' ikh i vvesti v svoyu leksiku.

Suschestvuet mnozhestvo anekdotov, parodiruyuschikh nesovmestimost' real'nogo smisla s bukval'nim perevodom.
