B.V.Gnedenko rodilsya 1 yanvarya 1912 g. v Simbirske (nine Ul'yanovsk).
V 1930 godu on okonchil fiziko-matematicheskoe otdelenie pedagogicheskogo fakul'teta Saratovskogo universiteta. S sentyabrya 1930 po avgust 1934 goda B.V.Gnedenko rabotal assistentom Tekstil'nogo instituta v Ivanove. Zdes' Boris Vladimirovich uvleksya teoriej veroyatnostej, zdes' im bili napisani pervie raboti po teorii massovogo obsluzhivaniya. Etot period deyatel'nosti sigral ogromnuyu rol' v ego formirovanii kak uchenogo i pedagoga.
V 1934 godu Boris Vladimirovich postupil v aspiranturu mekhaniko-matematicheskogo fakul'teta MGU. Ego uchitelyami bili A.Ya.Khinchin i A.N.Kolmogorov. Kandidatskuyu dissertatsiyu na temu "O nekotorikh rezul'tatakh po teorii bezgranichno delimikh raspredelenij" on zaschitil v iyune 1937 goda. S 1 sentyabrya etogo zhe goda B.V.Gnedenko – mladshij nauchnij sotrudnik Instituta matematiki MGU, a s 1 sentyabrya 1938 goda – dotsent kafedri teorii veroyatnostej mekhaniko-matematicheskogo fakul'teta MGU. Doktorskuyu dissertatsiyu "Predel'nie teoremi dlya nezavisimikh sluchajnikh velichin" B.V.Gnedenko zaschitil 28 maya 1941 goda. Dissertatsiya sostoyala iz dvukh chastej: teorii summirovaniya i teorii maksimal'nogo chlena variatsionnogo ryada. S tekh por Boris Vladimirovich schitaetsya osnovatelem matematicheskoj teorii ekstremal'nikh znachenij sluchajnikh posledovatel'nostej.
S 16 oktyabrya 1942 goda po 20 avgusta 1945 goda B.V.Gnedenko – professor mekhaniko-matematicheskogo fakul'teta MGU. V 1945 godu Ukrainskaya Akademiya nauk izbiraet Borisa Vladimirovicha svoim chlenom-korrespondentom. V etom zhe godu on pereezzhaet vo L'vov i rabotaet v akademicheskikh uchrezhdeniyakh i v universitete. V 1948 godu Boris Vladimirovich izbiraetsya akademikom AN USSR.
Issledovaniya po predel'nim teoremam bili poditozheni B.V.Gnedenko v sovmestnoj s A.N.Kolmogorovim monografii "Predel'nie raspredeleniya dlya summ nezavisimikh sluchajnikh velichin" (1949 g.). Za etu knigu avtoram v 1951 godu bila prisuzhdena premiya im.P.L.Chebisheva.
Kurs lektsij po teorii veroyatnostej, kotorij Boris Vladimirovich chital v L'vovskom universitete, posluzhil emu osnovoj dlya napisaniya uchebnika "Kurs teorii veroyatnostej" (1949 g.). Eta kniga mnogokratno izdavalas' v raznikh stranakh i yavlyaetsya odnim iz osnovnikh uchebnikov po teorii veroyatnostej i v nashi dni.
V 1946 godu vikhodyat ego "Ocherki po istorii matematiki v Rossii" i sovmestnaya s A.Ya.Khinchinim kniga "Elementarnoe vvedenie v teoriyu veroyatnostej".
S 1950 goda B.V.Gnedenko rabotaet v Kieve v Institute matematiki AN USSR i v universitete (zaveduyuschij otdelom teorii veroyatnostej Instituta matematiki (1950–1960) i direktor etogo instituta (1955–1958), zaveduyuschij kafedroj teorii veroyatnostej i algebri KGU, predsedatel' byuro Otdeleniya fiziko-matematicheskikh i khimicheskikh nauk AN USSR).
Pereekhav v Kiev, Boris Vladimirovich obraschaetsya k novoj problematike, na etot raz otnosyaschejsya k matematicheskoj statistike (proverka odnorodnosti dvukh viborok). Etot tsikl ego rabot poluchil mirovoe priznanie. V etot zhe period B.V.Gnedenko nachinaet razrabativat' dva napravleniya prikladnikh nauchnikh issledovanij – teoriyu massovogo obsluzhivaniya i primenenie matematicheskikh metodov v meditsine. Rabota po pervomu napravleniyu privela k vikhodu monografii "Vvedenie v teoriyu massovogo obsluzhivaniya" (sovmestno s I.N.Kovalenko) (1966), a po vtoromu – k sozdaniyu pervogo v mire elektronnogo diagnosta serdechnikh zabolevanij (sovmestno s N.M.Amosovim, EA. Shkabara i M.A.Kulikovim) (1960). S 1955 goda Boris Vladimirovich vozglavil rabotu po organizatsii Vichislitel'nogo tsentra AN USSR, rukovodil rabotami po sozdaniyu universal'noj vichislitel'noj mashini "Kiev" i spetsializirovannoj mashini dlya resheniya sistem linejnikh algebraicheskikh uravnenij, napisal (sovmestno s B.C. Korolyukom i E.L.Yuschenko) pervij v nashej strane (v otkritoj pechati) uchebnik po programmirovaniyu (1961 g.).
V 1960 godu B.V.Gnedenko vozvraschaetsya v MGU na dolzhnost' professora kafedri teorii veroyatnostej mekhaniko-matematicheskogo fakul'teta, kotoroj rukovodit s 1966 goda do poslednikh dnej svoej zhizni.
V Moskve Boris Vladimirovich nachinaet zanimat'sya teoriej nadezhnosti, organizuet vmeste s Ya.M.Sorinim, Yu.K.Belyaevim, A.D.Solov'evim, Ya.B.Shorom i L.Ya.Shukhgal'-terom Vsesoyuznij seminar po razlichnim voprosam nadezhnosti pri Politekhnicheskom muzee, otkrivaet seminar po matematicheskim voprosam teorii nadezhnosti na mekhaniko-matematicheskom fakul'tete. Sovmestno s Yu.K.Belyaevim i A.D.Solov'evim vipuskaet monografiyu "Matematicheskie metodi v teorii nadezhnosti" (1965 g). Za tsikl rabot v oblasti nadezhnosti B.V.Gnedenko vmeste s blizhajshimi spodvizhnikami bil udostoen
Gosudarstvennoj premii SSSR (1979 g.).
V svyazi s zadachami nadezhnosti Boris Vladimirovich vnov' vernulsya k issledovaniyu predel'nikh teorem dlya summ nezavisimikh sluchajnikh velichin, no uzhe v sluchajnom chisle. Za eti raboti emu prisuzhdaetsya premiya im.M.V.Lomonosova pervoj stepeni (1982 g.) i premiya Minvuza SSSR (1986 g.).
Boris Vladimirovich obraschal vnimanie na matematicheskie problemi strakhovaniya, uchastvoval, po krajnej mere, v odnom Astinovskom kollokviume (ASTIN colloquium, Sopot, 1969). Po ego initsiative i s ego aktivnim uchastiem na mekhaniko-matematicheskom fakul'tete v 1993 godu bila otkrita ekonomicheskaya spetsializatsiya dlya podgotovki spetsialistov v oblasti aktuarno-finansovoj matematiki.
Boris Vladimirovich prodolzhal interesovat'sya voprosami istorii matematiki. V razlichnikh zhurnalakh pechatalis' ego stat'i na etu temu.
Sovmestno s A.I.Markushevichem B.V.Gnedenko rukovodil rabotoj seminara po voprosam prepodavaniya matematiki v srednej shkole. On tesno sotrudnichal s redaktsiyami zhurnalov "Matematika v shkole" i "Vestnik visshej shkoli". Im bilo opublikovano bol'shoe chislo statej i knig po razlichnim aspektam prepodavaniya.
Boris Vladimirovich bil izbran pochetnim doktorom Berlinskogo universiteta im.Gumbol'dta (1976 g.), pochetnim doktorom Afinskogo Ekonomicheskogo universiteta (1993 g.), yavlyalsya chlenom Korolevskogo Statisticheskogo obschestva (Velikobritaniya), chlenom redkollegij ryada otechestvennikh i zarubezhnikh zhurnalov.
26–30 iyunya 2012 goda na mekhaniko-matematicheskom fakul'tete Moskovskogo gosudarstvennogo universiteta imeni M.V.Lomonosova sostoyalas' Mezhdunarodnaya konferentsiya "Teoriya veroyatnostej i ee prilozheniya", posvyaschennaya 100Nletiyu so dnya rozhdeniya B.V.Gnedenko.
Sem' osnovnikh sektsij konferentsii otrazhayut nauchnie interesi i dostizheniya B.V.Gnedenko v razlichnikh oblastyakh teorii veroyatnostej i ee prilozhenij, istorii matematiki i matematicheskogo obrazovaniya. V dokladakh konferentsii predstavleni itogi razvitiya ego idej i rezul'tatov.
